The University of Technology, Jamaica Students' Union (USU) yesterday successfully hosted the Clubs and Societies Day as part of the Week of Welcome activities put on to introduce new students to the University. New Students were afforded the opportunity to interact with club representatives, so that they could familiarize themselves with their activities and better decide which clubs they would become a part of based on their own interests.

The day’s proceedings began at about 9 am, with a prayer from Stacian Virtue. The Student Union’s Executive Secretary for the upcoming Academic Year 2016/17 Ms. Mishka Hylton then introduced the USU members to the student body. This exercise was meant to make the new students aware of the representatives that will be working on their behalf for the upcoming year. Ms. Hylton was followed by President of the USU Mr. Dimitri McGregor, who delivered the Official Welcome. This was accompanied by a video that also featured the members of the USU.

Other key highlights of the event were a presentation by VP, Public Relations Akeelia Thompson who went into detail about the purpose of the USU. Thompson made sure to mention that one of the USU’s main role is to lobby on the behalf of students, especially on issues that will have a negative impact on their ability to adequately complete their degree. Granville Knight, 1st VP Academic Affairs, also spoke to specific items related to enrolment, such as the Add/Drop option, providing clarity on an area that is often a cause of confusion especially for new students. Additionally, students took part in a Knighting Ceremony, led by Anthony Davis, which saw them recite the UTech, Ja pledge.

The event was well attended by students, and also garnered great support from the clubs, many of whom, one could tell, went all out to ensure that their displays were attractive and commanded the attention of those who filled the auditorium. The efforts of the USU, the different clubs and societies, sponsors and organizers should thus, be lauded for creating a truly memorable experience for these new students.
