AFRICAN CULTURAL RENAISSANCE MOVEMENT ANNOUNCES A NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION

The African Cultural Renaissance Movement (ACRM) has declared a national call to action to stop the demolition of our building by the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech). The University plans to remove our building, and have it replaced with a Parking lot.

Established in 1971, ACRM is the oldest Pan-African Organization among tertiary institutions in Jamaica. ACRM’s building was provided by Dr. Alfred Sangster, the first President of UTech and is one of the last four remaining board structures on campus.

By enlisting your help You will be supporting an organization that:

Ø  Tackles juvenile delinquency through our evening school outreach programme
Ø  Preserves our African Cultural Heritage for sustainable development in our communities
Ø  Acts as a feeder to recruit students for UTech
Ø  Advocates for the protection of our children from abduction and abuse
Ø  Promotes the awareness of African Cultural Heritage on campus and in the wider communities
Ø  Facilitates research on African Culture
Ø  Invests in culture by helping students and community members in the creative arts to develop their skills and talent as well as gain exposure
Ø  Fosters the growth of youth leaders to impact the school community, Jamaica and the world
Ø  Acts as a bridge between the Grass roots/Rastafarian community and UTech

v  If ACRM’s building is demolished, an important space for African cultural awareness and for which black people can benefit from their creative energies, will cease to function. On Wednesday June 17, 2015 at 10 am we ask that you stand in solidarity with ACRM by wearing BLACK and joining us in forming a barricade around ACRM’s building as we seek to prevent the planned demolition.

ACRM is a historic cultural asset to the student community as well the African Cultural Heritage of Jamaica. Therefore our building and operations must be preserved not only for the sake of this generation but also for generations thereafter who stand to benefit from the aid we provide. We ask that the National and International Community stand with us in ensuing actions as we seek to mobilize the effective campaigns in order to secure the safety of our building.
