The African Cultural Renaissance Movement (ACRM) has been selected as a recipient of an Ubuntu Award. The presentation will be made at an official ceremony to be held at the Knutsford Court Hotel on Sunday April 29, 2018 beginning at 4pm. The Ubuntu Awards is a humanitarian award that honours Jamaican citizens, residents and organizations that have had an unique, transformative and enduring influence on the way that Jamaican society values the most vulnerable.

The ACRM is to be recognised for it's over 40 years of service to the development of youth through education and the creative arts. The ACRM was founded in 1971 on the University of Technology, Jamaica Papine Campus, then called the College of Arts, Science and Technology, by a group of students, during the heights of the Black Power Movement lead by Guyanese Scholar Walter Rodney. The aim of the movement was to expose residents in the neighbouring communities of Gordon Town, Papine, August Town as well as Kintyre to their black culture, history and heritage.

ACRM Evening School
Upon interacting with these residents, they soon discovered that  many did not complete secondary school and a few lacked a primary level education. In response to this finding, an Evening School was then established. The ACRM Evening School began with the teaching of O' Level English and Mathematics as well as remedial primary school English and Mathematics classes.  Over the years however, additional subjects such as Principles of Accounts and Business were added.

Through providing quality tutors and a supportive environment, the Evening School has been the avenue that many have used to pursue tertiary studies as well as to move on to better paying jobs. In recent times our students have matriculated to Teacher's Colleges, the University of Technology, Jamaica as well as the Vocational Training Development Institute.

Creative Arts

The ACRM has also nurtured the talents of youth through hosting cultural events such as Kulcha Fest and the Afro Hair Show, providing them with a platform to put their creativity on display. As a result we have had a handful of past members of the club who have gone on to develop careers as creative professionals, notably as authors, poets, musicians and photographers.

The ACRM is located on Haiti Avenue, on the UTech, Ja Papine Campus. They can be contacted at 977-7446.
